NEW YORK MALAYSIAN RESTAURANT LAUT RECEIVES PRESTIGIOUS MICHELIN STAR
Other Notable Malaysian Restaurants Fatty Crab and Nyonya Recognized in MICHELIN's Bib Gourmand Category
New York, NY, October 8, 2023 - Malaysia Kitchen for the World congratulates Laut, Fatty Crab, and Nyonya restaurants in New York for acknowledgement in the 2011 MICHELIN Guide for New York City Restaurants.
Laut is the proud recipient of one MICHELIN star, a huge culinary honor. Having a star means that not only is a restaurant among the best in its city, but also in the world. It is a mark of consistent excellence across all categories and it is based solely on the quality of the food. Located near Union Square in New York, Laut is believed to be the first U.S. Malaysian restaurant to receive this award.
"We're honored and thrilled to be recognized with a MICHELIN Star and to be in the same category as so many other fine restaurants around the world," said Michael Bong, owner of Laut. "We hope this prestigious award will generate more excitement about Malaysian cuisine and its unique flavors."
Among the notable Malaysian dishes served at Laut include Beef Rendang, a dry curry beef dish, Curry Laksa, a coconut milk-based curry soup, Satay, grilled and marinated chicken on skewers served with a spicy peanut sauce and Nasi Lemak, coconut rice served with chicken curry, chili, anchovies and egg. Colorful, exotic, and full of enticing flavors, Malaysian cuisine is a fascinating blend of Malay, Chinese, and Indian food traditions.
The MICHELIN guide has become an international benchmark in gourmet dining. Now representing 23 countries and three continents, the collection of 26 MICHELIN guides includes more than 45,000 addresses. Its team of highly trained inspectors visits establishments anonymously, applying Michelin's international standards for quality across many categories.
Fatty Crab and Nyonya received acknowledgment in MICHELIN's Bib Gourmand category, also known as "inspectors' favorites," for restaurants delivering everyday excellence at a reasonable price.
"Not only is this a wonderful honor for Laut, as well as for Fatty Crab and Nyonya, but it elevates the position of Malaysian cuisine in the U.S. overall," said Wan Latiff, MATRADE commissioner. "The award complements the goal of our Malaysia Kitchen for the World campaign, of which these restaurants are active participants. Our campaign seeks to boost interest among Americans to try Malaysian food and visit Malaysian restaurants."
